“Can art change the world? Maybe… we should change the question: Can art change people’s lives?”
JR is the pseudonym of a French photographer and street artist. JR stands for the initials of his first name, which is Jean-René. Describing himself as a photograffeur (a mix of “photographer” and “graffeur”—French for “grafitti artist”), h exhibits freely in the streets, communities and public spaces of the world, catching the attention of people who are not typical museum visitors. He states that the street is “the largest art gallery in the world.” JR’s work combines art and action, and deals with commitment, freedom, identity and limits.
